The Art And Cultural Aspects Of Greek Persian Wars

The Art And Cultural Aspects Of Greek Persian Wars

by Kenneth Bennett

As history as shown, there have been battles and wars since the beginning of time. While some of these, like the American Civil War and Viet Nam are quite well known, others are not. For example, the Greek Persian Wars of ancient Greece have only recently come to light in history books at various schools and universities.

Whether using Flashcards, books which can be found through online websites such as Amazon or Google, or learning in the classroom, the battles are now reflected through a number of artistic paintings in galleries and museums. With art and culture now being two of the most popular areas of interest to all ages, it is understandable why this is the case.

While one could study this period for years, there are some who have been able to describe the period in a page or two. As such, by looking at this brief overview, one can determine whether or not this is a period in which one might be interesting in studying on a broader basis.

In most cases, discrepancies over land, disagreements over politics, desire for something another has or revenge are the causal effects of war. When it comes to the American Civil War for example, the fight had to deal with freedom and an end to slavery. Whereas, the Viet Nam war was one in which America had no direct relation other than to help others fight a long and bloody war, which many found unnecessary in the end.

While this is the case, the desire to acquire these resources was not actually the catalyst that began the battle between the Athenians and several other troops. Instead, King Darius sent Persian troops to battle in Athens after the Athenians set fire to Sardis. As such, in this case, it was an act of revenge and somewhat of a defensive move with the additional aspect of acquiring natural resources from the Athenians.

Knowing there was no way to defeat divided troops, the Athenians retreated and went home to regroup. Once having regrouped King Darius then sent envoys to demand these and other resources and supplies from Greece and the surrounding islands. Originally the Athenians sent aid upon request, until the troops arrived to find that the counter troops were divided.

Once having gone home and regrouped, the Greeks returned to the war, sailed to Sestos and captured the land and people of the region. Once the war had ended, a large number of artists including painters and sculptors began creating art based on the culture and war during the period. As such, while there were no real winners in what was a very bloody and lengthy war, the art and culture which came out of the period still amazes, enlightens and entertains people all over the world.

To learn more about these wars, check out various history related videos on YouTube and other video sites, do an online search related to the Greco Persian or Greek and Persian wars, or take a history class based on the period at a local public, private school or university. In addition, there may be some art or history museums which offer public tours based on paintings from the period.
