Marathon battle is one of the most known battles that occurred during the ancient times. The battle took place in the 490BC. It was considered the first invasion of Persian Empire to the Greeks. The main goal of the attack was to acquire the two cities which were Athens and Eretria. During the invasion, Athens and Eretria incurred immense losses, and they did not want to venture into any more fights. Nevertheless, the cities initially succeeded in destroying and burning the Sardis.

The victory of these two cities gave them confidence in their ability to defend themselves against any invasion. Athens had mobilized over 10,000 hoplite battalion who could uphold the territory to death. The Warfield was between hill and sea on about 26 miles North of Athens. This was an ideal plan for Persian Calvary. The surveying of war field gave Athens the advantage of such a terrain and the large magnitude of their force.

Prior the actual fight, the Athens could organize for a five-day stalemate. It was blocking all the exits and ensuring that no foreigner could enter within that territory. The Athens army was sending some of their soldiers to the marathon, and thus it could be easier for any foreigner to defeat them from their land since there was no much defense. Some delay strategies also favored the Athens army very much.

It is also true that the Athenians were the first to attack the Persians despite that they were outnumbered. The main reason for the attack was not necessarily known. Nevertheless, it was noted that this was because of lack of Persian Calvary in their camp. The approach was to encircle the Persian center and conquer the Persian army. Only 192 Athenian and 11 Plataea were lost.

Another tactful approach used by the Greek was the Phalanx formation. They used to form a fore-wall with their shields and protrude their spears on the sides. Their shields were sturdy, and they took advantage of such strength. The tactics employed proved to be very tactful since the Persians had not yet recognized such approaches.

The battle is considered a very significant occurrence in the history of Europe. It marked many transitions and in the history of different cities. It led to the development of fantastic new cities and territories within the European continent. The war had a significant influence on civilization along with modern development in western society.
